First racing sailboat powered by FC
ACCIONA aimed at sailing around the world in the world’s toughest single-handed race without emitting CO2. For this purpose, a racing sailboat was designed and set to sail with a renewable system on board, including a fuel cell and hydrogen storage as well as other renewable energy sources.
Throughout the 2 years of the project, Marcos Rupérez was in charge of the emergency electric traction system, hydrogen and fuel cell system. The sailboat successfully circumnavigated the world in 2012, becoming the first of its kind to do so without emitting CO2. It did not manage to finish the race, due to problems with its keel over the last few days.
